Antwerp - May 04, 2004 – Opel's assembly plant at Antwerp, Flanders, is to invest a further 100 million euro to produce a fourth Astra model, the cabriolet, De Tijd newspaper reports. Following investments of 500 million euro last year, the plant moved on to the new five-door Astra in January this year and will soon start building two other new Astra models - the break from August and the three-door from January. Some 245,000 cars will be produced at the plant this year, slightly lower than capacity due to the introduction of the new models.
The cabriolet is due to start production in 2006 and Opel expects to build around 25,000 of the cars at Antwerp. Flexible production standards at the plant mean that this number can be increased if demand is higher.
